Ray William Johnson doing an Equals Three episode

It is very common for a lot of us to turn to YouTube if we need to learn how to do something. But we also go to the website when we feel like listening to music or watching random videos about other people’s pets. However, YouTube has something more to offer other than its infinite supply of cat videos; it’s the vlogs. A “vlog” is a term short for video blog, and it’s more interesting than its written counterpart because vloggers, people who make vlogs, really do make an effort to make these videos worth your while.

Vlogs have different purposes. Just like essays, some are made to inform, some to entertain you, and some to persuade, but there are silly ones, too, that are just too random to be identified. They come in various genres, too. Comedy, drama, music video, and even adventure. Some are plain tutorials and documentaries as well.

With that said, there are a lot of things you can find on YouTube that add something to you, whether it’s knowledge or points of view. But whichever you watch, it’s also a safe assumption that improving your communication skills is inevitable – just make sure the YouTube channel you visit is in the language that you want to learn.

Here are some examples:

If you’re looking for a good laugh, The Equals Three Show is a YouTube series hosted by Ray William Johnson. The episodes in this channel are just compilations of funny videos where he also gives comments on each video clip. There are other comedy series you can find on his channel called Ray William Johnson.

But if you have a nerdy and/or geeky side in you, Vlogbrothers is a YouTube channel of Hank and John Green. John Green being the author of books like Fault in Our Stars and Looking for Alaska. This channel basically talks about various things like mental illnesses, physics, literature, and then some. There are just a lot of subjects that they cover which are very good academically and culturally. On the other hand, it’s also the way they present the topics in their videos that hooks you. It’s not the typical lecture-type clip because the people behind this channel really do make an effort to keep you watching their videos. In addition, if you’d like to learn a lot about anything academic, they have another channel that focuses heavily on academic subjects but presented in a fun way which is CrashCourse.

YouTube has also been very useful to many famous music artists making their music videos available to anyone with an internet connection to watch. However, it is useful for rising and independent artists, not just in music but also in general, because it gives us a refreshing take on our musical interests. Many artists do covers of other people’s music or post music videos of their originals on YouTube. Kurt Hugo Schneider is a YouTube channel that helps artists do awesome covers. It’s worth watching.

So those are the YouTube channels I frequent in my downtime. If those channels aren’t your particular brand of tea, there are multitudes to choose from, which means at least one is bound to become one of your favorites. With that said, happy surfing and “don’t forget to be awesome.
